ISR Parent Guidelines
Thank you enrolling your child with Infant Swimming Resource. The following Guidelines have been outlined and reated to allow you to provide your child with the best and safest experience during his or her participation in ISR Lessons. Many of these Guidelines have been established based on 41 years of research and experience and thus, they exist to protect the health and wellbeing of your child. Please review the following list carefully and address all questions to
your instructor. THANK YOU!
1. If you have registered for the first time, the second phase of the ISR National Registration Processing System is the shipment of an ISR Welcome Kit to your home. This Kit will contain your ISR Parent Resource Book (PRB). Please
read the ISR PRB in its entirety. This book will answer most of your questions and educate you about our
method for teaching aquatic self-rescue™ skills, as well as general water safety and safeguarding your home aquatic
environment.
2. There is wonderful information in the PRB regarding the importance for your child of your attitude and emotions with regards to lessons, so please keep in mind that your child is constantly observing you and taking his or her emotional cues from you. So maintain a positive, supportive attitude throughout your child’s ISR Lesson experience both at home and poolside. If you have a question or a concern regarding lessons, please contact me directly.
3. Your child’s 1st lesson will likely be shorter than normal as this may likely be my first opportunity to meet you and your child. I may review your registration and will answer any questions prior to getting your child in the pool.
Once in the pool, if you child is under 1, he or she will be introduced to the backfloat. For those over 1, we will spend most of the lesson working on learning to rely on the poolside for security and establishing proper breath control, meaning your child will learn to close his or her mouth prior to going underwater.
CRYING is not unusual and should be expected.
Children are being introduced to a new person and skill and there is NORMALLY crying associated with this learning process. Many but not all children will cry less as they become more familiar with me and more confident in their skills. Your attitude as the parent/caregiver is key. If you react negatively to you child’s crying and your child sees you
upset, your child will take his or her cue from you and the crying will likely intensify. You want to project a positive attitude showing your child you are confident that he can learn and that you are proud of his efforts. Smiling and clapping works great both at class and at home! (Maybe you’ve experienced crying hysterics changing a diaper or in a
candy/toy aisle and think back to your reactions and how that affected the situation. I’m guessing the diaper was still changed or the candy was still not purchased. He was happier once he had a dry diaper or was out of the store and your child will be happier once he can swim, not to mention safer. If you gave in and chased him around the room to get the diaper on or bought the candy to appease him, you need to realize this program will require a shift in approach.)
At the end of the lessons your child will be placed on his left side on 2 of the towels that you have brought and covered with the 3rd towel allowing for a brief resting period following the lessons.
4. Remember that you are required to bring a signed copy of your child’s ISR National Registration form to your instructor on the first day of lessons. If you cannot locate the original email from ISR that contained this
document as an attachment, you can log back onto the ISR National Registration Website and log in to retrieve and print the form.
5. You will receive with your Confirmation of Registration Clearance email from ISR the “How to complete the BUDS” and the “ISR FULL BUDS” forms as attached documents. (If you cannot locate this email, please contact me and request that I email a secondary copy of the documents to you.) Please review the “How to” document, as well as the additional information regarding the BUDS contained within your ISR PRB. The Poolside BUDS will be completed, in
addition to the FULL BUDS, on the pool deck with your instructor. The completion and submission of the FULL BUDS to the instructor and the completion of the POOLSIDE BUDS is required before EVERY lesson.
If the BUDS forms are not complete and available to the instructor, your child will not be able to swim that day. This is a requirement of ISR’s insurance and is non-negotiable.
6. Diet is an important aspect of your child’s ISR Lesson Experience. Your child should not eat or drink milk within 2 hours of their lesson time slot. In addition, infants and toddlers should avoid apple products throughout the duration of their ISR Lessons. Apple products are high in fiber, which can cause gas and bloating that will make the floating and swimming maneuvers practiced during ISR lessons difficult and sometimes painful. Please review the Diet section of your ISR PRB for more information.
7. All children (who are not potty trained) participating in ISR Lessons must wear the swim diaper that you were
given the purchase code with your ISR Welcome Kit or a similar swim diaper with a plastic lining to each lesson. “Huggies” disposable swim diapers are not a substitute. This helps to eliminate fecal and urine contamination of the
swimming pool. Please limit bathroom use for emergencies only. There are several restroom option off of Grand on your way to lessons.
8. For your child’s safety, we require every parent to bring three (3) towels to each lesson. The use of three towels on the pool deck helps to reduce the risk of spreading communicable disease. Please read your PRB for more information regarding this protocol.
9. Weekly lessons fees are payable on Mondays in advance for that week. Lesson fees are $90/week. Payments can be made via cash or check and deposited into the payment envelope.
Please make checks out to Jacquelyn OBryan.
10. Consistency is crucial when learning self-rescue skills. Bringing your child every day will increase
the rate of progress and retention of skills.
11. Videotaping of Lessons is allowed once a week on Fridays.
12. Please keep all children, not currently participating in lessons, seated quietly next to you. Do not allow them in or near the water. It is distracting and unsafe to the instructor and student in the water if other children are running around or trying to play in the water.

- Please be on time for your lesson! However, please drive VERY
considerately through my neighborhood. I’d rather do a schedule shuffle than get
complaints of rushed driving through the neighborhood. Arrive early
enough to allow time to change your child before their lesson time. I will do
what I can to accommodate late arrivals, but greatly appreciate your efforts to
keep this to an absolute minimum. - If you are unsure as to your child’s ability to safely participate in lessons, call your instructor for verification of your child’s readiness to swim. Children can safely take swim class if they have a runny nose or low-grade temperature (under 100.5 degrees orally).
- When in doubt as to whether class is being held with regards to weather, call your instructor by 1:30 pm the day of class. Classes will only be cancelled for lightening.
- Only lessons cancelled by the instructor will be refunded/prorated. Credit lessons will be given for a child’s prolonged illness (more than 2 days) with a doctor’s note. All other missed lessons will NOT be refunded or
credited.
