About Me
I am a mom of two wonderful children. As a young girl, I went through traditional Red Cross lessons. It took 8 years of such lessons, before I thought I could probably save myself if I had to. I didn't want this for my own children. First and foremost, I wanted to do everything in my power to make sure they didn't become another statistic. Secondly I wanted them to have the confidence from having water skills.
When I was pregnant with my first, I started inquiring with other moms about swimming lessons. I knew the younger you started, the safer they would be and the more natural it would be for them. As a girl in the late 70s, I had seen the original Dateline piece on Infant Swimming Resource and figured that's what all swim programs would teach. I was shocked to hear from every parent I spoke to that this was not at all the case. I heard stories of spending countless hours and small fortunes and yet the children were not capable of anything resembling self-rescue™ until they were well into elementary school. I heard stories of lessons that involved singing and playing when they were babies, teaching them what a safe place the water was. I heard stories of swimming with floaties and teaching the kids that they were "great swimmers". I had children come to our personal pool and tell me they could swim, only for the parents to rush up in a panic with the life vest. What if they didn't have that life vest? That child was convinced he was a great swimmer, no life vest required. I had parents bring their children to our pool who could swim 3 feet from an instructor to a wall and therefore the parents thought they could swim. But when that wall wasn't within 3 feet, he lifted his head out of the water for air, his legs and body fell vertical and he gasped for air while flailing his arms and next thing you know, the parent was jumping in the water fully clothed, (Blackberry in pocket).
This decidedly was not what I had in mind. Then at a party, I saw an 18-month old OWN the pool. He was comfortable, confident, happy, and safely swimming back and forth (and back and forth and back and forth) to his mom. And thus began my ISR story. I knew my children had to go through this program. It wasn't optional. However, there wasn't an instructor within 100 miles of my home. So, long story short, I became an instructor and now 200 students later, it was one of the best decisions I've made.
I always carefully watch my children in and around the water but I am so thankful to have never experienced the heart sinking, stomach flip flopping anxiety I've heard so many other non-ISR parents speak of when their children are around water. I think what really sets me apart from other swim lesson programs is a combination of the incredible ISR techniques and my experience as a mother of two young children. I understand what you feel while watching lessons and I am always open with my communication as to what I am doing and what your child is learning every step of the way. By the end of the 6 weeks, I promise you will not feel that “Parent Panic” when your child is in or near the water.
